It has been
since Jaime Herrera Beutler last held an in-person town hall.
Where is Jaime… in the district?
Jaime Herrera Beutler has certainly not made herself available to her constituents. Her last in-person town hall was on January 17, 2017. That’s right. The last time Jaime held an in-person town hall, Barack Obama was president.
For some reason, Jaime refuses to engage meaningfully with her constituents. And she refuses to engage with her Democratic opponent Carolyn Long. She has refused to debate Carolyn and ignores debate invitations from reputable, bi-partisan organizations such as the League of Women Voters.
The last time that Jaime appeared in public with Carolyn was at a candidate forum in Goldendale, where 17 other candidates were also invited. This event was not a debate — not even close. How do we know? Well, the moderator repeatedly said so.
Where is Jaime… on health care?
Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler claims to have voted over 80 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act — without a plan to ensure that Southwest Washingtonians will have access to affordable and quality health care. That’s downright irresponsible.
Jaime Herrera Beutler told the editorial board of The Columbian, “I think I voted more than 80 times to repeal the ACA.” Yet Jaime never had a plan to require that insurance companies cover people with pre-existing conditions or to keep pharmaceutical companies from further inflating the costs of prescription drugs.
It also appears that Jaime cannot explain the difference between a single-payer health care system and a public option. It is entirely reasonable to expect someone who voted so many times to repeal the ACA to know exactly what she was voting against.
Where is Jaime… on fiscal policy?
Once again, Jaime has taken action without thinking through the consequences, and her constituents in Southwest Washington are paying the price.
Jaime voted for the GOP Tax Scam last December, a bill that gave massive, permanent tax breaks to corporations. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the tax bill Jaime voted for will increase the national deficit by nearly $2 trillion (that’s a 2 followed by 12 zeros). Jaime Herrea Beutler and her Republican friends in Congress are breaking new ground when it comes to fiscal irresponsibility.
Republicans claim that economic growth sparked by the bill will offset the increased deficit, but experts have said that the deficits created by the tax bill will be 5 times larger than any economic growth that may come from it.
Notably, Jaime said in her interview with The Columbian editorial board, “If I’m wrong, I’m not afraid to change.” Experts, economists, and market performance itself have all indicated that Jaime is wrong. But — surprise — she’s not changing. Jaime is sticking to her Republican talking points at the expense of a healthy economy and a prosperous middle class.
Where is Jaime… on choice?
With a Planned Parenthood Action Fund lifetime rating of only 3%, Jaime has an abysmal record on choice and protecting women’s access to reproductive health care.
Jaime Herrera Beutler has voted:
to defund Planned Parenthood. [H. Con. Res. 79, 9/30/15]
to allow states to defund Planned Parenthood. [H.J. Res. 43, 2/16/17]
for a 20-week abortion ban. [H.R. 36, 10/03/17]
for a bill that would intimidate abortion providers and medical professionals with severe criminal penalties. [H.R. 4712, 1/19/18]
to restrict young people’s access to reproductive health care. [H. Res. 125 to H.R. 5, 2/26/15]
During her tenure in Congress, Jaime has helped the Republican Party systematically threaten women’s rights by voting to roll back protections for women and reproductive health care providers.
